  1. This is a super well written guide, and I deeply appreciate it! However,

    I’ve been having complications 🙁

    Recently, I upgraded an ASUS G751JT laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I also updated all the drivers to accommodate Windows 10 via ASUS’ website. Now, my laptop’s disc drive will play CDs but not DVDs…A DVD doesn’t appear to be recognized at all…Whether this occurred before I updated drivers, I am uncertain.

    Method 1: The rollback driver button is grey’d out
    Method 2: Didn’t work
    Method 3: In control panel, I navigated to “Troubleshooter for Hardware and Device,” but, for some reason, “Hardware and Devices” was no listed.
    Method 4: Didn’t work
    Method 5: I navigated to the specified location in the registry, but UpperFilters and LowerFilters were missing.
    Method 6: I followed the directions and edited the registy accordingly, reset, and the issue persisted. Perhaps this may be because I left the DVD in the drive, and Windows wasted time trying to read it during startup rather than self-correct the issue after my registry edit?

  2. Not working?

    In registry editor
    Export the registry key {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    and all it’s contents to a folder
    this is going to be your backup.
    after doing so, minimize registry editor.

    then open device manager.
    under [view] enable “show hidden devices”
    then under “DVD\CD-ROM drives”
    uninstall all dvd/cd drives listed.

    then after you’ve done that switch back to registry editor
    and delete {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    from the registry.

    then restart your computer.

    upon startup open the folder where you exported the .reg file for
    {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    then open the .reg file and merge with the registry key windows auto created.

    then open registry editor and go over to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0

    modify EnumDevice1 and if it’s already set to “1” set it to “0” or vice versa.
    then check if your discs are working.
    if they are… good,
    then restart windows again to finalize everything.
    this worked for me. hopefully it does the same for you.

  3. Gabriel, I have had occasion to delete upper and lower filters but have avoided any other editing of the registry. Your steps appear quite good but my lack of experience has me stumped when you say “open the .reg file and merge with the registry key windows auto created”. It appears this step takes place BEFORE opening the registry editor. How will I know what registry key windows auto created and where will it be? I assume it will be {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and it will be in the folder the .reg file was exported to. But I am not certain of that and don’t want to wing it assuming I know what I am doing since this is new territory for me. Also how is a ‘merge’ executed? The rest of your steps are quite clear for my level of understanding. I further assume creating a restore point before attempting any of this will be prudent. Thanks for the guidance. P.S. I am going to research export and merge but would still like to hear back from you if this thread is still active.

  4. I really appreciate this guide. Very well written! However my disc drive still will not recognize discs. Looks like im taking this PC to the gravel pit and hitting it with some buckshot. RIP Dell, was a good 5 years 🙁

  5. None of these have worked. Great article though. The drive only has complications with blank discs. CD-R and DVD-R. The drive works fine on other machines, so at least I know it’s not hardware related.

  6. Well as I have reas it is jpg codex that is missing. Window Media player dont have that! BUT I CANT FIND ONE
    Bye from Susanne

  7. CDs and DVDs I burned myself work fine, it’s store bought software on CDs that are not recognized. None of the suggestions posted here made any difference.

  8. I’VE TRIED EVERY SINGLE SUGGESTION IN THIS ARTICLE MANY TIMES TO BRING MY CD DRIVE BACK TO LIFE (EXCEPT FOR THE ROLL-BACK : IT WASN’T CLICKABLE/ANY WAY TO MAKE IT CLICKABLE?)….I’M THINKING THAT MAYBE IT’S JUST READY TO BE THROWN AWAY. BTW: THIS IS A VERY INFORMATIVE ARTICLE AND CLEARLY WRITTEN.
